About Golden Cockerel Press

Golden Cockerel Press was founded in 1920 by Harold Midgley Taylor in Waltham St. Lawrence, Berkshire. In 1924 illustration/engraver Robert Gibbings became the owner of the press. Eric Gill was commissioned to create the Golden Cockerel typeface for the press in 1931 and provided illustrations for Golden Cockerel Press works. Facing financial difficulties, the press was sold to Christopher Sandford and two partners, Francis Newberry and Owen Rutter in 1933. The press was sold again in 1959 before closing in 1961.
