Artists' Books in UMD Special Collections

An overview of the artists' book collection found in Literature and Rare Books in Special Collections at the University of Maryland.

Introduction

Typography can be described as the way that printed matter appears. More specifically, it has to do with the physical type used in the printing process. We can see typography in artists' books manipulated in various way, allowing the book artists to use text as a means of artistic expression. Some ways typography as a design feature can range from the physical manner in which the text is put on the page- for example letterpress printing or handwritten text- to using text design in a more  artistic manner. Listed below are a selection of the artists' books with typography design features.
