Japanese Studies

This guides primarily describes resources available at the UMD Libraries for research on Japanese Studies. The guide also directs researchers to collections and resources beyond the UMD Libraries.

Find films

UMD Libraries Catalog - Search the UMD Libraries online catalog for the UMD's holdings of VHS, DVD and other audio/visual format items.  Go to Advanced Search, and limit your search to: Format - VHS, DVD video, or downloadable visual material.  Choose Held by University of Maryland, College Park, for searching the items that are available at the UMD.  

Databases

Films on Demand Master Academic Collection - Streaming video service of almost 26,000 full length videos of high-quality educational titles.  Most videos are available with closed-captioning. ​ 

Japanese Cinema Database - Created and maintained by the Agency for Cultural Affiars (文化庁), this database provides the information (ex. released date, the name of film distributing agency, name of director) of Japanese films (1896~ current).  

Japanese Film Database (JFDB) - It is a database of Japanese films co-managed by the Japan Foundation and UNIJAPAN.  You can find film synopses, cast & staff, and production & distribution company information.   

Kurosawa Digital Archive - This archive has over 27,000 items, such as scripts, production notes, and photos relate to Akira Kurosawa.  

​・Japanese Film Resources Online (JFROL - 映画資料所在地情報検索システム) - this database can search films related resources at the participating institutions.
