Specialized Searches: Google Scholar & Books

Depending on what you're searching for and the kind of information you want to find, you may be better served by using a specialized search engine like Google Books or Google Scholar. This video will introduce you to some of these specialized searches. Please note that the video briefly mentions the "Personal" search option, which is no longer a feature of Google searches.

  • When are you likely to use Google Scholar or Books instead of a traditional open search?

TIP: If you're planning to use Google Scholar, bookmark UMD Library's Google Scholar Page. If you search using the Google Scholar link that opens from that link, the results will include direct links to scholarly articles that the library has access to- just look to the right side of the search results page:
