Pompeii Resources in University of Maryland Libraries

Dr. Wilhelmina Jashemski was a professor at The University of Maryland from 1946 to 1980 and was the first non-Italian to excavate at the site of Pompeii.  Her specialty was first in Roman law, but after visiting Pompeii in the 1950’s, her focus shifted to this ancient city and the flora that once inhabited it.  She helped to establish the academic field of garden archaeology, writing several books on the subject.  Dr. Wilhelmina Jashemski was named woman of the year by the University of Maryland's President's Commision on Women's Issues in 1980.  She donated several of her books to the Maryland Room, as well as to some of the other libraries on campus.

  This book contains pretty much everything you might need to know about gardens and the role they played in ancient Pompeii. There are over 500 images (in a little over 300 pages) which include illustrations, maps, color photographs, and black and white photographs. There are also two fold out maps: one of the site of Pompeii, and another of the Villa at Torre Annunziata.

  This book contains text by Wilhelmina Jashemski and photographs by her husband Stanley Jashemski. Photographs include 30 images of the Pompeii area, including geography, art, architecture, remains of the city, and the modern city of Pompeii.   This book's intended audience is set towards a more juvenile crowd, but young and old alike will find this book interesting and informative. Written in an epistolary style, the book is comprised of the letters Wilhelmina and Stanley Jashemski wrote to their nieces and nephews about their travels and their stay in Pompeii. The book is filled with lovely illustrations by M. Sasek, as well as building plans and photographic prints. Inscription in book reads: "To the University of Maryland Library From Wilhelmina F. Jashemski."

  This book is divided into four chapters, as well as multiple appendices. The chapters include: Orgins and Early History of the Proconsular and the Propraetorian Imperium to the Beginning of the Second Punic War (218), History of the Proconsular and the Propraetorian Imperium 218-198, History of the Proconsular and the Propraetorian Imperium 197-27, and Epilogue: The Principate. Very helpful appendices follow, which give lists of individuals who were proconsuls or propraetors before 218, holders of imperium from 218-198, and those who were governors in the locations of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, Spain, Macedonia, Africa, Asia, Narbonse Gaul, Cilicia, Cisalpine Gaul, Bithynia, Cyrene, Crete, and Syria.
