About The Washington Post

Founded in 1877, The Washington Post, often referred to as The Post or WaPo, is a daily newspaper based in Washington, D.C., covering national, international, and local news. While it widely circulates in the Washington metropolitan area, it also has a large national audience.

The Post has acquired or merged with several other publications over the course of its history, resulting in a few name changes:

  • The Washington Post (1877 - 1954)
  • The Washington Post and Union (April 15-29, 1878)
  • The Washington Post and Times-Herald (1954 - 1973)
  • The Washington Post (1973 - present)
