COMM 306: Rhetorical Methods in Communication

Use this library research guide to locate sources for your final presentation.

What Are Archives?

Many historical primary sources are carefully preserved and stored in archives. In contrast to libraries, you can't check out archives materials, and most items can only be viewed in person at an archives building. However, there are many archives in the DC area which you can visit -- including the UMD archives! Most archives do have some of their collections digitized online, too.

Below, explore the UMD Special Collections & Archives and other physical and virtual collections. You can also look for historical primary sources in our historical newspaper databases.

UMD Special Collections & Archives

UMD's special collections and archives are housed in Hornbake Library, with some digitized content available online.

The archives specialize in content and artifacts related to the University of Maryland, the State of Maryland, history of unions and the labor movement, broadcasting (TV and radio) history, postwar Japan, performing arts and music, literature and rare books, and historic preservation.

Want to view collections material in person? Schedule an appointment and plan your visit.
