Speeches in Text, Audio, or Video

Find transcripts or recordings of well-known speeches, with a focus on United States history.

Tip: There are many collections of speeches published in book form. Visit the Books page to explore the Libraries' collections.

How To Find Speeches

To find a specific speech, you can search for the title of the speech or the name of the speaker. Many historical speeches are freely available online (some suggested sites are listed above).

If you're looking for more general resources on speech and oratory, you might get better results if you search using Library of Congress subject headings. Here's how:

  1. Go to UMD Discover
  2. Select Advanced Search
  3. In the Search Filters section, find the Any Field option. Select Subject in the dropdown.

  4. In the Enter a search term box, copy or type a Library of Congress subject heading. Some subject headings related to speeches in the U.S. include:
    • Speeches, addresses, etc., American
    • Political oratory -- United States
    • Public speaking
  5. Click Search.

Tip: If you find another resource on your topic in UMD Discover, scroll down on the page to view its subject headings. Use these in your Advanced Search, or click the link to find other sources that use the same subject heading.
