High School Visits to McKeldin Library

This guide will help high school teachers and students orient themselves with McKeldin Library before visits.

Instructions

Below are step-by-step instructions for High School students on using UMD Discover to locate books in McKeldin Library in advance of their visit.

  1. You can search for books in McKeldin Library using UMD Discover, UMD's library catalog!
  2. Review how to search for books in UMD Discover by watching the Searching for Books video.
  1. Access UMD Discover on the Library's website. Please note that you should avoid using the search box on the Library's homepage, as it searches the entire website instead of just the catalog.
  2. In the UMD Discover search box, type in your search terms. Once you type in your search terms, a dropdown box should appear. Click on "Books."

  1. You will now be taken to your results page and will need to further refine your results to find print books available in McKeldin Library. You will find the filters under "Refine My Results."

  1. Under "Limit To," choose "Physical + Print Resources."

  1. Under "Resource Type," choose "Books."

  1. Under "UMD Libraries," choose "UMCP McKeldin Library."

  1. Click "Apply Filters."
  2. Confirm your book is available in McKeldin Library. You can tell when a resource is available available, because it will say "Available at UMCP McKeldin Library."
  3. Use the call number for the  book to find where the book is located in McKeldin Library. Use the below "How to Find a Book" handout for a floor map of the Library by call number.
