Gothic Literature in Special Collections

An overview of Gothic Literature held in Special Collections at Hornbake Library

Brief Biography

Charles Brockden Brown (January 17, 1771 – February 22, 1810) is known as one of the more influential early American authors. His Gothic works are subtle in their depravity, and often focus on dream-like sequences that include sleepwalking, anxiety, and desolate landscapes. His work influenced several other Gothic authors, such as Nathanial Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe.
