What Are Archives?

Many historical primary sources are carefully preserved and stored in archives. In contrast to libraries, you can't check out archives materials, and because digitizing content requires a lot of time and investment, most items can only be viewed in person at an archives building. However, there is still plenty of primary source content available in digital form.

Below, explore the UMD Special Collections & Archives and other archival collections. You can also look for historical primary sources in our historical newspaper databases.

UMD Special Collections & Archives

UMD's special collections and archives are housed in Hornbake Library, with some digitized content available online.
