Black Classic Press is a book publishing company founded by W. Paul Coates (the father of Ta-Nehisi Coates) in 1978 with the goal of publishing works by and about people of African descent. Black Classic Press received a boost in attention after Walter Mosley chose to publish Gone Fishin′, a prequel to his Easy Rawlins mystery series, through Black Classic Press. Mosley chose to publish through Black Classic Press to demonstrate that a book could be successful without a mainstream publisher.
The Black Panther Party was a revolutionary organization founded in 1966. The party offered a variety of community social programs and advocated for a variety of causes such as racial equality and anti-imperialism.
Broadside Press was founded by Dudley Randall to promote the work of African-American writers. Randall specialised in publishing attractive but affordable works. In 2015 Broadside Press merged with Lotus Press, becoming Broadside Lotus Press. Broadside Lotus Press is the oldest continually operating black owned press in the United States.
The Modern Editions Press was a press founded by Kathleen Tankersley Young, a poet and editor who was part of the Harlem Renaissance.
Third World Press was founded in Chicago in 1967 by Haki R. Madhubuti, Johari Amini, and Carolyn Rodgers. Third World Press is the largest independent black owned press in the United States.
