Search full-text historic content from 28 major U.S. newspapers, including several African American and Jewish periodicals. Each newspaper has its own separate database, and each database contains several publications (different editions of the same paper). Tips:

Full-text, full-color digitized scans of alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals, drawn from the special collections of participating libraries. These periodicals were produced from the 1950s to the 2010s (with a few more recent publications) by feminists, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists and dissident GIs, Black Power advocates, Latino and Chicano Movement activists, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press, and alternative literary magazines.

Ethnic NewsWatch is a collection of "ethnic media" publications – newspapers, magazines, and journals published by and for people from marginalized racial, ethnic, religious, immigrant, and diasporic communities. The collection includes more than 2.5 million articles from over 300 historical and current periodicals (1959 - present). The majority of content comes from African, African American, Arab American, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Caribbean, Eastern European, Hispanic and Latino, Jewish, Middle Eastern, and Native American publications based in the U.S. and Canada. Most articles are in English, but around 25% are in Spanish.

We subscribe to over 60 historical newspaper archives. Many historical newspapers have been preserved and digitized in scattered batches, so you may find content in multiple places and formats.

Chronicling America contains millions of newspaper pages from nearly every state and territory in the United States published through 1963, digitized as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).

• How to access: Free to access and download. The majority of content is in the public domain or has no known copyright restrictions.

A product of Ancestry.com, Newspapers.com has licensed and digitized over 28,000 historical newspapers in an online archive. It's especially useful for U.S. newspapers, including local publications that may be harder to find elsewhere, but it also includes some content from Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Panama.
