JOUR 757/459i: History of Investigative Journalism

Use this guide to find sources for your final projects and other assignments

Historical Newspapers

With the exception of archives digitized and made publicly available, most of the content on this page is part of the deep web or not online at all, so you'll have to access it through a library database or in person!

Start by looking for digitized copies of historical newspapers in our databases:

Archives

Many historical primary sources are carefully preserved and stored in archives. In contrast to libraries, you can't check out archives materials, and because digitizing content requires a lot of time and investment, most items can only be viewed in person at an archives building. However, archives are always working to digitize more content, so there is still plenty to find online, especially about well-known people or events.

In the collections below, you'll find documents, photos, oral histories, videos, sounds, and more. (If you're feeling extra motivated, you can visit the DC-based archives in person, too!)

UMD Special Collections & Archives

UMD's special collections and archives are housed in Hornbake Library, with some digitized content available online.

Want to view collections material in person? Schedule an appointment and plan your visit.
