Resources for your Baltimore baseball history research project

What Are Archives?

Many historical primary sources are carefully preserved and stored in archives. In contrast to libraries, you can't check out archives materials, and because digitizing content requires a lot of time and investment, most items can only be viewed in person at an archives building. However, there is still plenty of primary source content available in digital form.

Below, explore the UMD Special Collections & Archives and other Baltimore/Maryland archival collections.

UMD Special Collections & Archives

UMD's special collections and archives are housed in Hornbake Library, with some digitized content available online.

Want to view collections material in person? Schedule an appointment and plan your visit.

Use WorldCat to Find More Collections

  1. Head to UMD Libraries' WorldCat.
  2. Search keywords in the search box. For example, baltimore baseball stadium
  3. If needed, use the filters on the left side to narrow your search results. For example, Format > Archival Materials checkbox.
  4. Click a relevant result.
  5. Scroll down to the Other Availability & Holdings section at the bottom of the page, and click the Other Libraries Worldwide button to see where the item is located (if not at UMD).
  6. The page that pops up will display the libraries that own the item. Click Request Item Through Interlibrary Loan to request a physical copy or digital scan. You can also locate and search the holding library's catalog to access the material there. (This part of the process will depend on what type of content you need and how much, among other factors!)

TIP: Try using the Subjects linked in an item's record to find other materials on the same topic.
