Ethical Use of Information

What is the Ethical Use of Information?

Welcome! This guide is a primer on the ethical use of information -- or, how to integrate information from other sources into your own work, in a way that gives credit to the original ideas of others.

Guidelines about appropriate attribution vary by discipline and by culture. This guide is designed for University of Maryland students specifically, and uses UMD's Code of Academic Integrity to define appropriate and inappropriate uses of information. Although much of the advice here can be applied in other contexts, always be sure to check with your professor/department if you are ever uncertain about how to ethically use information in your discipline.

If after reading this guide you still have questions or have suggestions for other resources, please feel free to email Lindsay Inge Carpenter at linge@umd.edu
