Call Numbers to Know

A piece of material is assigned a call number according to the Library of Congress Classification Outline. Class M is for music. Below are some of the most useful call numbers to know.

Solo instrument:

  • Flute: M60-64
  • Oboe: M65-69
  • Clarinet: M70-74
  • Bassoon: M75-79

Solo with piano:

  • Flute: M240-244
  • Oboe: M245-247
  • Clarinet: M248-252
  • Bassoon: M253-254

Two wind instruments: M288-289

One wind and one stringed instrument: M290-291

One wind and one plucked instrument: M296-297

Piano trios: M315-319

Wind trios: M355-359

Woodwind trios: M357.2

Wind quartets: M455-459

Wind quintets: M555-559

Solo instrument with orchestra:

  • Flute: M1020-1021
  • Oboe: M1022-1023
  • Clarinet: M1024-1025
  • Bassoon: M1026-1027

How to Browse the Shelf in the Online Catalog

Did you know that there are two different interfaces to search the UMD catalog?

There is this Worldcat interface that you are probably familiar with:

Performing a basic search using Worldcat.

And there is the "Classic Catalog" interface:

In order to search by call number and browse items that are on the shelf electronically you will need to use the Classic Catalog.

By using the Classic Catalog you can immediately narrow your search to call numbers:
