GIS at UMD Libraries

What is GIS, and how do the University of Maryland Libraries help you use it?

GIS Workshops

Library staff teach a series of three workshops that provide a basic introduction to ArcGIS 10 GIS software and some of its capabilities.  These workshops are offered every semester, including during the summer.  Self-directed online training is also available through ESRI's Virtual Campus.

Workshop 1: Introduction to GIS

Curious about GIS? In this workshop you will learn the basics of what GIS software is and what it can do, in a hands-on environment. You will learn basic symbology and labeling, how to query, and how to create a map layout.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Microsoft Windows.

Monday, October 13 at 9:30 am-12:00pm McKeldin Library, Room 6107

Workshop 2:  Data Management

The next step: this workshop goes into detail about what kinds of data are used in a GIS, and how to find and evaluate data for your needs. You will learn to join and relate tables, and to geocode.

Prerequisite: Completion of Workshop 1: Introduction to GIS or familiarity with GIS software.

Tuesday, October 21 12 at 9:30  am - 12:00 pm McKeldin Library, Room 6107

Workshop 3:  Spatial Analysis

Actual analysis: in this workshop, you will learn five of the most common tools used in GIS analysis, and perform geoprocessing on both vector and raster data.

Prerequisite: Completion of Workshop 2: Data Management.

Tuesday October 28 at 9:30 am - 12:00 pm  McKeldin Library, Room 6107

Limited to 25 students.
