Open Access (OA) refers to the open availability of information online, free of any fees or other access barriers. There are several models employed across the publishing ecosystem to produce OA scholarship. The following resources give more information about publishing your work open access here at UMD.

Open Access Options for AOSC Journals Updated 12-1-23
The purpose of this document is to illustrate Open access (OA) publishing options for the listed core journals in Atmospheric & Oceanic Science (AOSC). Open Access Publishing Fund
Open to UMD faculty members, post-doctoral researchers, or currently enrolled graduate or undergraduate students whose article has been accepted for publication in a gold open access journal (excludes hybrid). Funds 50% of article APC up to $3000. One funded article per fiscal year. The fund opens up annually in early September.
Open Access Publishing Agreements
The UMD Libraries participate in a number of open-access publisher agreements and journal discounts that are available to UMD authors. This page provides up-to-date guidance on current OA agreements.
UMD Equitable Access Policy
UMD's Equitable Access Policy officially went into effect in 2022. This grant of nonexclusive rights allows the University to distribute peer-reviewed versions of these articles free-of-charge to the general public, through DRUM, the University of Maryland’s online institutional repository. The policy is designed to ensure that authors retain the freedom to submit new work to the journals of their choice. The policy also includes waiver and embargo options to help protect authors’ freedom and control over their work.
