RG 25-2: Personal Papers of Individuals

25-2-1 Elizabeth V. Beach papers
Elizabeth V. Beach (1882-1951) was a pioneer member of the Eastern Conference of the Music Educators National Conference.
25-2-2 Henry L. Cady papers
Henry L. Cady co-authored the Schneider-Cady USOE Project E-016, Evaluation and Synthesis of Research Studies Relating to Music Education, funded by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (1965). The project is a compilation of a majority of the theses, dissertations, and articles written between 1930 and 1962 on studies relating to music education.
25-2-3 Charles B. Fowler papers
Charles B. Fowler (1931-1995), American writer and consultant in the arts, was noted for his activity and commentary in the field of arts education.
25-2-4 Glenn Gildersleeve papers
Glenn Gildersleeve (1894-1970) was an American music educator, school music administrator, and author. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1946. He served as State Director of Music in Delaware (1930 1946), and was a professor of music at Madison College in Virginia (1947 1961, now James Madison University). Gildersleeve was active in the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), now known as the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), specifically in the Eastern Division (President 1940-1941), but also served nationally on the Research Council and as a member of MENCs Board of Directors. Gildersleeve was the author of more than five books, several articles, and over twenty reviews.

Philip Gordon (1894-1983) was a composer, arranger, conductor, and music educator who lived and worked in New Jersey and was active in both state and national music education organizations.
25-2-6 Dwight W. Lott scrapbooks
25-2-7 Lowell Mason collection
Lowell Mason (1792-1872) is known as the founder of American school music education and co-founder of the Boston Academy of Music. In addition to establishing curricular music in American public schools and teacher training in music, he is also known for the success of his compositions and arrangements of hymn tunes and tune books.
25-2-8 Luther Whiting Mason collection
Luther W. Mason (1818-1896) was an American music educator and editor of school songbooks. A student of Lowell Mason, and a pioneer of primary school music instruction, he spent two years in Japan introducing Western music to the imperial court.

Gladys Pitcher (1890-1996) was a music education, pianist, and cellist. Throughout her career she served as a public school music educator in New England as well as an editor and arranger of choral music for multiple music publishers.

Donald Pond (1906-1983) was a music educator, composer, and performer and is noted for his work at the Pillsbury Foundation School in Santa Barbara, CA.

25-2-16 George C. Wilson papers
George C. Wilson (d.2001) was a music educator, band director, Director and Vice-President of the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan. In 1948, he was elected a member of American Bandmasters Association (ABA), where he served on the board of Directors (1963, 1966), as vice-president (1964), and president (1965), and in 1998 was elected as an honorary life member.
25-2-17 Irving W. Wolfe papers
Irving W. Wolfe (1903-1977) was a musician and music educator. The collection consists of materials pertaining to "Together We Sing," which Wolfe collaborated on with Margaret Fullerton.
25-2-18 Rose Marie Grentzer papers
Rose Marie Grentzer (1914-1985) was a choral music educator, member of NAfME, University of Maryland faculty member, and director of the University of Maryland Madrigal Singers.

Arthur L. Williams (1902-1973) was a music educator and a member of both NAfME and ABA.
25-2-21 Michael Mark papers
Michael Mark (1936-2018) was an American music educator and author. He received his degrees in music from Catholic University (BM 1958 and DMA 1969), George Washington University (MA 1960), and the University of Michigan (MM 1962). During his career, Mark was employed by public school systems and universities in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and New York. As an author, he published numerous books and articles on music education, frequently on the history of that topic.
25-2-22 Satis Coleman papers
Satis Narona Coleman (1878-1961) was a music educator who specialized in teaching children. She taught primarily in studios in both Washington D.C and New York City. It was her belief that a childs music education should begin at an early age and it should be an integral part of their everyday life.
25-2-23 Hazel Morgan papers
Hazel N. Morgan (1894-1985) was an American music educator. She received degrees from the University of Nebraska, Nebraska State Teachers College, Claremont College, the University of Minnesota, and the MacPhail School of Music. She authored numerous texts on music education and was inducted into Music Educators National Conference (MENC)s Music Educators Hall of Fame in 1998 (the organization is now known as the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)).
25-2-24 John Curwen manuscripts collection
John Curwen (1816-1880) was an English congregational minister who, later in life, devoted himself to developing and promulgating the Tonic Sol-fa pedagogical method. The John Curwen Manuscripts, part of the NAfME Historical Center, contains six volumes written by Curwen that date from 1863 to 1868.

RG 25-4: Manuscripts

The Manuscripts sub-group consists primarily of a collection of over 4,000 research papers from the 1920s to 2000s on music education, many of which were presented at national and regional NAfME conventions but never published.

The collection is kept in closed stacks, however, SCPA maintains an internal database which can easily be searched.

RG 25-5: Books

RG 25-5 contains five book collections devoted to music education. All are available for use in the Lowens Reading Room.

SCPA also maintains electronic inventories for each of these book collections if there is something specific you are searching for.

Over 100 scores for children's operettas, dating from 1912 to 1966.
