GIS at UMD Libraries

What is GIS, and how do the University of Maryland Libraries help you use it?

Search the Libraries' Catalog

You can use the catalog to search both for books and for CDs relating to GIS.  Choose "subject beginning with" and enter "geographic information systems".

CD-ROM Data Collection

GIS datasets on CD owned by McKeldin Library are either acquired through the Federal Depository Library Program or purchased selectively.  Using the data on some of the CD-ROMs requires that specific access programs be installed on the workstations. User guides are located on top of the CD-ROM cabinet. Other data may be located by searching the Catalog. Ask at the Information Desk to use the CD-ROMs.

Important: Always be aware when using GIS data that it may be licensed - there may be restrictions on how and where you can use the data and what sort of citations you need to provide.

Data on the Internet

A great deal of GIS data is available for free on the Internet.  Below are just a couple of good sites.
