As states and local municipalities develop plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions over next few decades there will be a substantial reliance on tree planting to offset carbon emissions that cannot be eliminated. Trees provide many benefits in addition carbon sequestration. Calculators that provide estimates of the co-benefits of trees heighten public awareness of the value of trees and can aid planners in targeting areas where tree plantings should occur.
With the release of many new tree calculators and tools there is a need to summarize what tools exist and what the capabilities of these tools are. Such information will be of value to stakeholder groups seeking identify and promote tree planting using criteria other than just carbon sequestration. Additionally, this information will aid in identifying tools and calculators that may (or may not) suitable for interfacing with social data bases and municipal level policies.
