What is the Augmented Reality Sandbox?

Check out this video from UC Davis of an AR Sandbox with real-time water flow simulation.
The AR Sandbox is an interactive educational tool that blends augmented reality with a physical box filled with reflective white sand. It enables users to create and explore 3D topographic features—such as mountains, valleys, rivers, and even simulated ecosystems—projected in real time onto the sand's surface. As users shape the sand, the virtual landscape responds dynamically; for example, digging a hole might generate a virtual lake. This hands-on, immersive experience makes learning about geography, earth science, and environmental systems both engaging and intuitive.
