Natural History in Special Collections

This non-profit organization was established in 1967 to promote the preservation of the ecological well-being of the Chesapeake Bay through conserving its natural resources, combatting pollution, and educating the public. Important issues documented in the foundation's records include the environment of the Bay, as well as actions proposed and undertaken to eliminate threats to this environment.

Lynch was an environmental activist and vice president of the Coalition to Preserve Black Marsh. The papers relate to natural conservation campaigns, particularly Black Marsh and North Point State Park in Baltimore County, Maryland.

This collection includes correspondence, research, publications, administrative subject files, and photographs from the Department of Botany of the Maryland Agriculture College. The materials range in date from 1898 to 1980.

This collection includes reports, photographs, experiments and projects, and administrative material from the Department of Entomology of the University of Maryland. The materials range in date from 1893 to 1968, with the majority of material being found within 1926-1965.

This collection includes the publications of Arthur B. Gahan, a graduate of the Department of Entomology Department of the Maryland Agricultural College and served as Assistant Entomologist for both the Maryland Agricultural College's Department of Entomology and the Division of Cereal and Forage Insect Investigations of the U.S. Bureau of Entomology. The material within this collection ranges in date from 1905 to 2003, with the majority of material being found in 1906 to 1952.

This collection includes research materials, publications, photographs, memorabilia, and biographical material of James Reveal, a faculty member of the University of Maryland's Botany Department (1969-1999) and director of the Norton-Brown Herbarium of the University of Maryland from 1979-1999. Materials within this collection range in date from 1965 to 2000.

This collection includes research manuscripts, reports and pamphlets, clippings, dissertations, memorabilia, photographs and slides, and related activites by Romeo Mansueti (1923-1963), a biologist and research professor at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory and the University of Maryland. This collection includes material related to ichthyology (the study of fish) and herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles). The materials range in date from 1922 to 1963, with the majority of materials found within 1950 to 1963.

The Sierra Club, Maryland Chapter, can trace its origins to the establishment of the club's Southeastern Chapter in 1968. This chapter eventually split into several smaller groups, among them the Potomac Chapter, which had members in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The Maryland Chapter monitors legislation, works to save natural areas from development, sponsors outings, and disseminates information
on environmental matters.
