This guide is intended to assist you in locating ebooks for your teaching and research.

The UMD Libraries offer access to thousands of ebooks.  Locating these resources can be done in a variety of ways:

  • By searching for content in Worldcat and limiting results to ebooks licensed to the UMD Libraries
  • By searching for content in discrete ebook collections, such as Ebsco Ebooks, Proquest Ebook Central, Springer Ebooks, and others.
  • By searching for content in open access ebook repositories such as the Open Textbook Library and others.

During the COVID-19 crisis, many ebook publishers and repositories are allowing access to their collections for a limited period of time.  These include the HathiTrust, JSTOR, Project Muse, and others.

Be aware that many of these ebook collections have restrictions on how many users can access them at one time.  Many also include digital rights management (DRM) software, which is embedded coding that limits the amount of copying and downloading allowed, and the amount of time during which a user can access the book.
