Welcome to the Maryland Room Resource Guide to Maryland Literature!
This guide provides an overview of resources related to Maryland authors and literary figures that can be found in Special Collections and University Archives at the University of Maryland. These materials can be viewed in the Maryland Room in Hornbake Library. Maryland authors are loosely defined as authors that were born in Maryland, lived a significant portion of their lives in Maryland, or those whose work is closely tied to the state of Maryland.
Although most Maryland writers have never limited themselves solely to Maryland themes or settings, many of the titles by lesser known authors in the collection often have a greater emphasis on local themes and communities. Maryland authors who have achieved a more national reputation are also well-represented in the collection, including Francis Scott Key, Edgar Allan Poe, H.L. Mencken, Stanley Plumly, James M. Cain, John Barth, Anne Tyler, Roland Flint, and Tom Clancy.
This guide provides basic bibliographical information on some of Maryland's most well known authors, as well as lists of resources to explore in Special Collections and University Archives in Hornbake Library, that will provide a glimpse into Maryland's impressive literary legacy.
