Starting Points for Research

WorldCat UMD - Books and Other Library Materials

The following are some of the types of materials you can locate using WorldCat UMD:

  • Articles
  • Journal titles
  • DVDs
  • Government Documents
  • Historical Manuscripts
  • Print Books
  • E-Books
  • Sound Recordings
  • Dissertations
  • Music Scores
  • Internet Resources

For best results:

  • Use the Advanced Search link from the front of the WorldCat UMD home page.
  • Change the drop-down menu entry from Keyword to Subject
  • Enter subject terms. 
  • Set the "Audience" to Not Juvenile and the "Language" limit to English.
  • Click Search.
  • Use the options on the left-hand side of the results screen to further narrow your results by type of material, year, subject, etc.
  • On your results list, click on the item title of interest. From the record that appears: 
    • Look for the green View Online icon to determine if an electronic version is available.
    • Look at the “Availability” section to determine if the item is at College Park and if it is checked out, otherwise unavailable, or on shelf. NOTE THE LIBRARY that holds the item!
    • If the title is not available through UMD campuses or electronically, click on "Request Item" to request a copy to be sent from another library.

  • For Academic Search Ultimate - To locate speeches, search try searching the speaker (as PE - People) or topic of the speech as a subject and limit the document type to Speech. Includes Vital Speeches of the Day. Use the Search Within This Publicationfeature to search within this publication.
  • For America: History and Life  To locate speeches, search try searching the speaker (as PE - People) or topic of the speech as a subject along with the word speeches as subjects.
