Unicode is "a character coding system designed to support the worldwide interchange, processing, and display of the written texts of the diverse languages and technical disciplines of the modern world." - The Unicode Standard

While there are fonts that will allow for IPA transcription required in your final project, Unicode is a more reliable method to use.

Using Unicode with a PC

Microsoft Office (installed on Library PC's) suggests one of two ways to incorporate Unicode into documents:
 
1) Use the Unicode special character chart. To insert a Unicode character, type the character code, press ALT, and then press X.

For example, to type a dollar symbol ($), type 0024, press ALT, and then press X

2) Click Start, point to All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and then click Character Map.

To select a character in the Character Map, click the character, click Select, click the right mouse button in your document where you want the character, and then click Paste.

Using Unicode with a MAC
 
To use Unicode on a MAC, you may either use the character viewer  or, with unicode hex input selected from the settings>language & text >input sources menu, hold the option key and type the 4 digit code anywhere.

There are eight libraries in the University of Maryland system. Seven are at College Park, and one is at the Shady Grove Campus near Rockville.

Most databases, reference works, and e-journals are restricted to current students, faculty, and staff at the University of Maryland.

In order to access databases and online journals remotely, use Database Finder. If prompted to select a campus, select the option for University of Maryland, College Park and then "Students, Faculty, and Staff". Then log in with your Directory ID, the same username you use for email and other campus services.
