This guide was created to support research in Women in the Media.

Using WorldCat UMD

  • Launch WorldCat UMD
  • Click on Advanced Search.
  • Change the drop-down menu entry from Keyword to Subject.
  • Enter subject terms. Sample subject searches to try (in Advanced Search) are listed in the box below.
  • Set the "Audience" to Not Juvenile and the "Language" limit to English.
  • Click Search.
  • Use the options on the left-hand side of the results screen to further narrow your results by type of material, year, subject, etc.
  • On your results list, click on the item title of interest. From the record that appears: 
    • Look for the green View Online icon to determine if an electronic version is available.
    • Look at the “Availability” section to determine if the item is at College Park and if it is checked out, otherwise unavailable, or on shelf. NOTE THE LIBRARY that holds the item!
    • If the title is not available through UMD campuses or electronically, click on "Request Item" to request a copy to be sent from another library.

Locating Full Text Newspapers and Journals in WorldCatUMD

To locate newspaper and magazine titles in WorldCat UMD:

1) Click on Advanced Search

2) For a newspaper - enter the title of the newspaper in the Title field. Select University of Maryland, College Park as the Library, and set the Format as Newspaper. Click search.

4) In the results list, click on the title listed and look in the section of the entry that says "Find a copy in the Library: Get it in the Library". Click on View Item Details to see the full list of options available to access the title. Note the years available and call number for Microfilm (or bound journals):

Note: For Magazines, the process is the same, except choose Journal, Magazine as the Format. View the holdings information as indicated above:
