Microfilm in MSPAL

A guide to microfilm in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library.

Overview

This collection is split into four parts.

The originals are located in the Various Locations in England. Part 1 is located at Cambridge University & Ely Library. Part 2 can be found at Rowe Music Library. Parts 3 and 4 are both located at Fitzwilliam Museum.

The call number in MSPAL is ML96.4 .M86 1987.

Parts 1 and 2 of this collection are medieval sacred and secular music, and 16th and 17th century English lute and consort music. The most substantial complete autograph of part 3 is that of the anthem "O Praise the Lord with one consent," and there are also important fragments that fill gaps in the Royal Music Library autographs. Part 4 of the collection contains the Fitzwilliam Virginal book, the Paston part-books, the Tolquhon part-book, the Lowther lute-book, Lord Herbert of Cherbury's lute-book, and the Bull manuscript.

The four parts include but are not limited to:

  • Part 1: Music manuscripts before 1850 from Cambridge University Library and Ely Cathedral.
  • Part 2: Music manuscripts in the Rowe Music Library, King’s College.
  • Part 3: Handel manuscripts in the Fitzwilliam Museum.
  • Part 4: English music manuscripts before c. 1880 in the Fitzwilliam Museum.
