Captain John Smith

Captain John Smith

Captain John Smith (1580-1631) was an English explorer and a leader at the Jamestown, Virginia colony. He made two voyages in the Chesapeake Bay in 1608, exploring the land and interacting with the native Indians he encountered. Although the accuracy of his observations has been questioned, his journals and maps of these voyages added greatly to knowledge of the area and of the peoples he met there.
