Full-text news reporting from 1980-present from major national and international sources. To use the system off-campus, log in using your campus userid/password when prompted.
Within the search box you can use the following search aids to refine your search:
/n command (where “n” equals any number you specify between 2 and 255)
Allows you to specify the number of words that appear between two search terms
A rule of thumb:
Use /2 when searching for a person's name:
John /2 McCain
Use /5 when searching for items in the same phrase:
Hogan /5 budget*
Use /25 when searching for items in the same sentence:
keystone pipeline /25 drilling
Use /50 when searching for items in the same paragraph (NOTE: You can use /p instead of /50 for the same result)
higher education /50 funding
higher education /p funding
! symbol: truncation (multiple characters)
Example: A search of Econ! will result in entries including terms such as: Economic, Economics, Econometric, Economy, etc.
[Note: You will need to watch for “false hits” when you use truncation! In the example above, results could also include such terms as Econoline, the automobile.]
* symbol: truncation (single character)
Example: A search of rain* will result in entries with rain, rains, rainy in the search results, but not rained.
A permanent link to an individual article may be copied by clicking on the paper/link icon on the item record:

The Wall Street Journal (a Dow Jones product) is not available in LexisNexis. A number of other business-related titles are included in LexisNexis. However, if you specifically need to find an article in the WSJ - you can find it by searching Factiva:
The first option to search for news, and one that will allow you the most control over your search, is to use the Search Box in the center of the LexisNexis Academic search screen.
You can enter a string of search terms in the search box either as individual terms, or using advanced search tools such as proximity or truncation:

Once you have made your selections from the advanced search menu and click Apply. Search terms will appear inside the main search box, while restrictions will be listed below the search window. Click Search to execute your search:
Another method to search for news on the main LexisNexis screen is the Search the News widget. This searches news articles from 1980-present using keywords.
Note that advanced search features (truncation, /n, date limits) are not available in the Search the News widget.
To access the Search the News widget, click on the drop-down arrow at the end of the box to expand the widget.
Searches can be limited to a specific news source, as indicated below:
To modify your search results, add one or more terms in the Search within Results box in the upper right corner of your results screen. Click Back to Original Results to remove the added term.
Another way to retrieve news articles on topics currently in the news is through the Hot Topics Links box located directly below the Academic Search Single Search box on the front page of Lexis.
These are pre-canned searches created for hot topics that will dynamically execute when you select them. Topics will change as news items "trend".

To modify your search results, add one or more terms in the Search within Results box in the upper right corner of your results screen. Click Back to Original Results to remove the added term:

To search by a specific news content type, select All News from the Search by Content Type menu:
Click on the Advanced Options arrow under the main search box.
Either enter a specific source in the Source box, or select one or more source types by checking the boxes next to the source type
Click on the type of article you wish to access using the checkboxes
Note: You may also limit your search by date using the date restriction boxes. For a search of specific segments of the document, use the Build Your Own Segment Search Box. (Detailed information on how to Build Your Own Search using segments is available from Lexis.)
Click Apply to apply all of your search restrictions and search terms. Search terms will appear inside the main search box, while restrictions will be listed below the search window:

LexisNexis is full-text but does NOT contain charts, tables, graphs or photographs. Articles that originally had these items included within them will indicate this at the end of the record:
To view graphics such as charts, tables or graphs - you will need to locate the full-text of the original article. One way to do so is to check WorldCat UM for the name of the newspaper, and locate and view the original in print or microfilm.
