Look up a Legal Case Widget

The default news search on the main LexisNexis screen is the Look up a Legal Case widget, located in the center of the screen.

To access the Look up a Legal Case widget, click on the drop-down arrow at the end of the box to expand the widget

Cases can be located in the following ways:

  • By citation – using all three parts of a legal citation (volume, reporter, page) such as:    483 U.S. 522
    • Note: Click on Citation Help in the widget for help in entering citations 
  • By parties – using one or both party names
  • By topic – searches the headnotes of cases for keywords entered.

Legal Case Advanced Search Options

For a more targeted search of legal materials, review the Legal section within the Search by Content Type menu

Select the type of legal content you wish to search:

  • Federal and State Cases
  • Landmark Cases
  • Law Reviews
  • State Statutes and Regulations
  • Shepard's Citations
  • Federal Statutes and Regulations
  • Legal Reference 
  • Patent Search

Once you have selected the type of legal material you wish to search, click on the Advanced Options arrow under the main search box. Advanced options will vary depending on the type of legal material you are researching.

Note: You may also limit your search by date using the date restriction boxes. For a search of specific segments of the document, use the Build Your Own Segment Search Box. (Detailed information on how to Build Your Own Search using segments is available from Lexis.)

Click Apply to apply all of your search restrictions and search terms. Search terms will appear inside the main search box, while restrictions will be listed below the search window:

Click Search.

Sample Patent Search

Patents are legal documents, and are easily searched in LexisNexis Academic. 

To search for a Patent, select Patent Search from the Search by Content Type menu on the main Lexis screen.

Click on the Advanced Options arrow under the main search box. 

Either enter the search term for what you wish to locate in the main search box, or use the Build Your Own Segment Search box to limit to one of the following:

  • Assignee - an individual who has had the patent rights assigned to them
  • Inventor - an individual credited for the invention

You may also limit your search by date using the date restriction boxes.
