GIS at UMD Libraries

What is GIS, and how do the University of Maryland Libraries help you use it?

Virtual Campus - Online Training

UM students, faculty and staff have access to free online courses provided by ESRI (see below for a link to the list of courses available). The classes cover a wide range of GIS topics and skills.  Virtual Campus courses are self-directed, and consist of a number of modules - a quick course might have 2-3 modules, while a longer one might have up to 10 or more.  Once you have registered for a course, you have a year to complete it online.

If you've taken a Virtual Campus course and liked it (or not), please feel free to comment below!

How do I sign up?

To sign up for a Virtual Campus course, simply e-mail the name of the course/s you are interested in to gis@umd.edu

Within a couple of days, you will receive an e-mail direct from ESRI with a registration code.

What you'll need:

  • A computer that has ArcGIS software. You can request a temporary trial version for your own computer once you're into the course module on the ESRI webpage.

  • A computer that will let you download the course data.
