Beginning in 1840, the U.S. Census began including more detailed information on agriculture. These census reports have varied widely over the years. Many of these reports are available online at the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Census of Agriculture Web page.
The manuscript Agriculture Census for Maryland is available on microfilm for 1850-1880 in the Maryland Room in Hornbake Library. This census lists farms by owners name and includes information on the value of the farm, acreage, farming machinery, crops and livestock production, etc.
Other Agricultural Census reports for various years that are available in print or on microfilm in the Maryland Room in Hornbake Library are listed on this page.
