Herculaneum was another town that was affected by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the August of 79 AD.  Those who are researching Pompeii should also view the information available to them on Herculaneum, as they may find important facts pertinent to their research.

Another chapter highlights the art of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

  This pamphlet was published in 1933 by the American Academy in Rome and was intended to give their students a portable compendium of the documentary evidence for the interpretation of the monuments for their use while on the ground. This guide also references to further documentation and recent publications (at the time). Much of this work is in Greek and Latin, with descriptions of events by scholars such as Cicero, Seneca, Livy, and Tacitus.

  There are two volumes to this Italian book on Herculaneum, published in the 1950's. The first volume includes many photographs of excavations carried out in the 1920’s and 1930’s, as well as some color illustrations. There are also fold out maps and plans of the area. This book contains an index for both text and illustrations, as well as a notes section. Volume two contains large fold out maps and plans, along with individual prints of related subject matter, such as the architecture of Herculaneum.
